Answers for dentists considering the program
Everything dentists usually ask about the Mastery Program, admissions, TMD and sleep care, therapeutic Botox, team training and the mentorship visit.
The program
QHow long is the Mastery Program?
QHow many dentists are accepted each year?
No more than ten, so every participant gets personal attention from Dr. Dahan.
QIs my team included?
Yes. The program includes dentist and team training plus monthly team coaching. Dr. Dahan’s team trains your team.
QDo I need to buy expensive equipment?
TMD and DSM services can often be added without a heavy equipment investment. Your discovery call covers what your practice already has and what it may need.
QWhat are the three pillars?
Training (dentist training, dentist and team training, business training), coaching (monthly dentist group coaching, monthly team coaching, quarterly one-to-one coaching) and mentorship (a two-day visit to the Ottawa TMJ and Sleep Apnea Clinic).
QWhat will I receive?
The working system from Dr. Dahan’s clinic, including consent forms, financial forms, patient brochures and instructions, checklists and the complete workflow, plus access to the member portal.
Admissions
QHow do I apply?
Request a discovery call through the application page. The team will contact you to talk through your practice and goals, and whether the program is the right fit.
QWhat does the program cost?
Tuition and the application process are covered on your discovery call, along with whether the program is the right fit for your practice.
QWho is the program for?
General dentists who want to treat TMD and sleep apnea patients and build those services into their practice, along with their teams.
TMD care
QCan a general dentist treat TMD?
Yes. Many TMD patients respond to conservative, reversible care that fits comfortably inside a general practice: education, self-care, oral appliances and appropriate adjunct therapies. The key is a structured evaluation and knowing which cases to refer. Scope of practice varies by state and province.
QDo I need special equipment to start treating TMD?
Often not much. Most of what TMD care needs is knowledge, a clear process and a trained team. Your discovery call covers what your practice already has.
QWhen should a TMD patient be referred?
When findings fall outside your training or scope, when red flags appear, or when a patient does not respond to conservative care. The program teaches these decision points using AAOP guidance.
Dental sleep medicine
QCan a dentist diagnose sleep apnea?
No. Obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician using a sleep test. Dentists play a key role in screening, referring and, when a physician prescribes it, providing oral appliance therapy and follow-up. Regulations vary by state and province.
QWhat is oral appliance therapy?
A custom-made device worn during sleep that holds the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway open. Clinical guidance supports custom, titratable appliances for adults with OSA who prefer them to CPAP or cannot tolerate CPAP.
QHow do dentists screen for sleep apnea?
With a few questions at recall and validated questionnaires such as STOP-BANG and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, plus observations in the chair and partner-reported snoring. Positive screens are referred to a physician.
Therapeutic Botox
QCan dentists give Botox for TMJ?
In many jurisdictions dentists may administer botulinum toxin for therapeutic purposes, but the rules differ by state, province and licensing body, and some uses are off-label. Always confirm your scope and training requirements with your regulator.
QWhat are the two protocols taught?
A TMJ protocol for muscle-related orofacial pain as part of a broader TMD care plan, and a migraine protocol for suitable headache patients. Both are taught with patient selection, consent and documentation.
Team and mentorship
QWho from my team takes part?
The program includes dentist and team training and monthly team coaching. On your discovery call we talk through your team and who should be involved from the start.
QHow often is team coaching?
Monthly, for the twelve months of the program, alongside monthly dentist group coaching and quarterly one-to-one coaching for you.
QWhere does the mentorship visit take place?
At the Ottawa TMJ and Sleep Apnea Clinic in Ottawa, Canada, the clinic Dr. Dahan owns and practices in.
QHow long is the visit?
Two days, as part of the 12-month Mastery Program.
